Proposal for a new u3a Interest Group in Charlbury: Artificial Intelligence
Charlbury is near Chipping Norton with its U3A branch.
Dear Mr Freeland
I hope you are well.
- I propose to launch a new interest group within our locality of Charlbury: Artificial Intelligence.
- As you know, artificial Intelligence is changing the world rapidly, but it also raises fascinating questions.
- I would love to create a group where our members can explore these ideas together in an accessible, jargon-free environment.
- To give you an idea of a starting focus, I plan to look at the topic on everyone's mind - Will AI take over humanity?
- Later, we can look at how AI intersects with human consciousness and modern physics. We will use curated reading lists and essays—such as the AI Looks at AI: Consciousness resource—to start discussions.
- This particular resource bridges fascinating topics like quantum mechanics, Eastern philosophy, and how neural networks sync up. It offers excellent, short reading prompts that are perfect for a monthly discussion group.
- Consciousness
. . . . . . Me
. . . . . .. Myself
Group Details Proposed:
- Frequency: Monthly (say, the second Monday or Tuesday of the month).
- Format: A mix of short presentations, group discussions, and sharing accessible articles/videos.
- Expertise Needed: None! This is an "AI for Everyone" style group where we learn and wonder together.
The national u3a "AI for Everyone" subject network offers structured syllabi and toolkits to help new groups like ours get off the ground, so we will hope to have plenty of central support.
Could you let me know what the next steps would be?
Warm regards,
Alan Harrison
U3A member
